Sedbergh was hit by the broader devastation that swept through Yorkshire and Westmorland in the late 16th century. Like much of Yorkshire, Sedbergh and its surrounding rural dales lost an estimated 30% to 50% of the population.
The plague disrupted local farming and the early stages of Sedbergh and Dent’s wool industry, as there were simply not enough healthy people to tend to the sheep or the fields
