In 1969, she found her independence through joining the police force. Veronica pounded the beat, until discovering that the prison service offered better pay and greater opportunities for women. Her postings included Holloway, Styal, East Sutton Park, and a secure unit in Brixton.
As first woman governor of HMP Armley, Veronica initiated a suicide prevention scheme and involved the Samaritans. When challenged to take on a prison described as ‘a basket case,’ she turned it around. She visited Russian prisons with a view to helping improve conditions.
Since retiring, Veronica has raised thousands of pounds for prison and other charities including the Shannon Trust, which supports prisoners helping fellow inmates learn to read.
