Education in Sedbergh

Sedbergh Primary School

Sedbergh Primary School caters for children aged from three (in the nursery class) up to eleven, with one class per year group.

Settlebeck High School

Settlebeck High School is a small community school catering for about 200 children in the 11 to 16 age group. It has small class sizes and a friendly yet purposeful approach which gets the best out of its pupils. This is reflected in SATs and GCSE results which are well above the national averages.

The school is one of nine small schools in Cumbria that have come together to form a 'Rural Academy', enabling them to share teaching skills and offer a wider range of subjects than would otherwise be possible. It became a member of the Rural Academy as a Technology College in September 2004.

There is no sixth form at Settlebeck but students are encouraged to broaden their horizons by looking beyond this small community and choosing the combination of courses which best suits their future needs from the many available in our surrounding area.

Further information is available on the Settlebeck High School website or by telephone on 015396 20383.

Sedbergh School

Sedbergh School amongst the greenery Sedbergh School is an independent school founded in 1525. There are about 340 boys and 120 girls at the school, more than 95% of the students are boarders living in six boys houses and two girls houses throughout the town. The pupils eat, sleep, work and play in their House, this creates fierce and lasting loyalty which Old Sedberghians retain for the rest of their lives.

The curriculum covers a broad range of subjects, sports and other outdoor activities. The playing fields visible around Sedbergh are testament to the importance placed on physical exercise. The School is renowned for its rugby and, since taking girls into the fold in 2001, it is also known throughout the north of England for its hockey and netball as well as its rugby and cricket.

Music and drama at the school are just as important as the outdoor activities. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) band travel throughout the world and the choirs, orchestras and actors do like wise. Every year the School puts on a performance at the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Further information and a calendar of events can be found on the Sedbergh School web site. Visitors are welcome at sports, drama or musical performances.
