Kirkby Lonsdale and the southern Lune Valley

Kirkby Lonsdale is a characterful little town 8 miles south of Sedbergh. There are many good shops, eateries and several excellent pubs. The town was used by the BBC in the filming of “Jamaica Inn”. A lovely walk takes you along the banks of the river Lune from Devil’s Bridge to Ruskin’s View which painter and poet John Ruskins described ‘as one of the loveliest in England’

Ruskin’s View

The river Lune flows gently southwards from Kirkby Lonsdale on its journey to the sea near Lancaster. A very pleasant drive or cycle ride follows the A683 passing through Melling, Hornby and Claughton (with perhaps a stop at The Highwayman Inn at Burrow) to the picturesque Crook of Lune. Cross the river and return to Kirkby Lonsdale via Gressingham, Arkholme and Whittington.

Further south the ancient city of Lancaster provides a fascinating day out with its castle, cathedral, maritime museum and much more.
