THE SECRETARY (Mrs L.M. Killops tel 015396 20279) IS NOW TAKING ENTRIES FOR THE OPEN DOUBLES COMPETITION BEING HELD ON SUNDAY 28TH MAY. This is open to all bowlers who are registered with the British Crown Green Bowling Association.
History of the Bowling Club
It was first mooted that a Club be formed in April 1906. The Upton’s of Ingmire Hall generously donated land firstly for the Gardens to be laid to commemorate Queen Victoria’s jubilee then a piece of land for a bowling green. A lot of meetings followed causing various delays and it was on the 29th March 1911 that an agreement was signed by the Parish Council and the Bowling Club for an annual tenancy and this still stands to this day. The Bowling Club undertook to maintain the green. In 2011 the Club celebrated the centenary. The Annual General meetings are held on the last Thursday in February each year.
Various competitions are held during the year for Club members. There is an annual competition open to all registered Crown Green Bowling Association members. Sunday and Wednesday afternoons are reserved for Club members only. Teams are entered in various local leagues. A ‘What’s on this month’ notice is posted in the canteen window. The club is affiliated to the British Crown Green Bowling Association and abides by the rules of that body. Visitors are welcome on non Club days for a fee of £1 per session for which there an honesty slot in the Clubhouse wall.
New members are welcome and taster sessions are held during the year for anyone who is interested and would like to have a try before committing themselves. All players are asked to wear flat soled shoes without a separate heel. Bowls are available for you to borrow.
Sedbergh Bowling Club’s green is situated at the rear of Queens Gardens about three quarters of a mile west of Sedbergh on the A684. Entry on foot can be made through the gardens and there is a car park which is accessed via Queens Drive. The entrance is between the last 2 bungalows on the right hand side.
