Why do I paint birds?

As a subject they offer unlimited opportunities in terms of colour, texture, and movement. When sunlight is reflected off a Starling’s wing every colour is there to be seen and as an artist, I’m challenged to record these effects with the paints on my palette. It’s their song that I love, the springtime sound of the Skylark or the lonely call of the Curlew that makes it so easy for me to imagine walking among the fells near my home. Birdsong is a powerful reminder of our surroundings and I doubt there are many people who when they hear the sound of a gull and do not immediately think of the sea? Small wonder that Monet is quoted has saying ‘I would love to paint the way birds sing’.

If only it was that easy!

I hope you enjoy the exhibition.

Stuart Gray

Stuart Gray has been an ‘illustrator’ and ‘graphic designer’ since leaving college in the early seventies. He has worked in several studios before becoming a lecturer at Wigan School for the Arts in 1994.

He retired from being a lecturer a few years ago and started to work with his partner Ruth Clayton in the successful Wickerfish art studio at Cedar Farm Galleries in Mawdesley, Lancashire teaching adults the basics of drawing and painting.

They closed the business in January 2016 and relocated to Sedbergh in Cumbria. He now works at Farfield mill in Sedbergh with Ruth where they have a studio. Stuart works with different media, but his specialism is acrylic. He enjoys painting landscapes and still life and he has filled a fair number of sketchbooks over the years!
