Stool by Howgill UpholsteryAfter running a successful family upholstery company in Southport, which had been established for over 60 years, Neil took early retirement in 2007 and moved to Sedbergh. However, having completed several small projects for friends and family, he realised that he missed the creativity of his work and in 2014 he opened “Howgill Upholstery”.

With a lifetime of skill in this traditional craft, Neil now specialises in re-upholstering antiques, easy chairs, dining chairs, piano stools, and occasional furniture and making bespoke headboards. In the workshop,Neil strips furniture back to its bare bones, removes old covers and replaces webbing, springs and padding as needed, and finally re-upholsters it with new fabric. There’s a large selection of pattern books to choose from and Howgill Upholstery is an agent for the fabulous wool tweeds from Abraham Moon. Neil is also happy to use customer’s own upholstery fabric.

Neil supplies upholstery sundries for the home upholsterer from his workshop, and fabrics can be ordered. A bespoke cushion re-filling service for those soft or sagging seat cushions is also offered.

A variation in Neil’s work is Joseph, a sheep with a multicoloured coat made for the 2014 Sedbergh Sheep Fest and which has become a well known icon for the Sheep Fest. Neil gave Joseph a companion, Josephine, for the 2015 Festival.

Neil is always happy to give advice, so please contact him if you have any queries. As opening times can vary, please call or email before making a special journey.
