Formed in 2004, the Stonebridge Quartet aims to explore and perform the more challenging works written for this combination. It has established a fine reputation in north-west England and elsewhere, with a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven through to Bridge, Britten, Prokofiev and Webern.
Julian Cann, violin, studied at London University where his violin tutor was Linda McLaren. He has subsequently been taught or coached by Reginald Stead, Martin Milner, Raphael Wallfisch and the Alberni String Quartet. Julian leads both the Stonebridge and Castalia quartets as well as playing with the Pennine Piano Trio, Lonsdale Baroque Ensemble and pianist David Chapman. He has played with National Concert Orchestra, Manchester Concert Orchestra and Northern Chamber Orchestra and has performed concertos with orchestras in the North West and Scotland. Julian also leads Lancaster’s Haffner Orchestra, with whom he has also appeared as soloist, and recently played in the Goetheanum, Basel. He is shortly to embark on a chamber music tour to Switzerland and Germany.
Jane Cull, violin, began learning the violin aged six while living in the USA. She later studied at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, winning several prizes and taking part in masterclasses with Dorothy Delay. Jane was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and attended chamber music courses where she was coached by the Endellion String Quartet. Whilst studying Engineering at Cambridge University she was an Instrumental Award Holder and led the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra. Jane plays a violin by William Atkinson, dated 1894
Allison Calderbank, viola, is a postgraduate of the Royal Northern College of Music where she studied with Asdis Valdimarsdottir and Pedrag Catanic. During the course Allison was accepted on the RNCM/Hallé professional experience scheme and played with the Hallé Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall. She also recently played with Sinfonia Cymru at St. David’s Hall in Cardiff and has performed regularly in the RNCM as lead or sub-principal viola. Allison has played in many of the orchestras in the North West, including four years as lead viola of Lancaster’s Haffner Orchestra and sub-principal/lead viola of the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra. Allison has played with the Stonebridge Quartet since 2004 and recently appeared with the D ’Avanzo Quartet from the RNCM.
Jeremy Lamburn, cello, is also a postgraduare of the Royal Northern College of Music, where he studied with Emma Ferrand. Jeremy’s orchestral experience includes work with the Northern Chamber Orchestra and, during a period of time living in Australia, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. A particular delight in chamber music has inspired Jeremy to work in various combinations from solo to quartet quintet and sextet. Jeremy also plays currently with the White Piano Trio and with pianist Nigel Spooner in duet partnership. Festival performances include solo Bach cello suites at Jenolan Caves (Australia), Ribchester and Sedbergh, and string quartet appearances at Carlisle, Doncaster and the Vaughan Williams Festival in Kendal and Cartmel.
