The Write Idea: Late Summer Book Events in Sedbergh, 17th to 25th September

This year our Books & Drama Festival has a new name, The Write Idea, and though the number of events is smaller than in previous years (cultural projects are having to trim their cloth just like the rest of us!) we believe we have retained the quality of speaker that audiences have come to expect.

Wednesday 8th September 2010 - Farm Walk Top

Harry and Mary Hutchinson welcome you to Uldale House where they farm 400 acres of in-bye land and have rights on Wild Boar Fell and Ravenstonedale Common. Come and join them on this leisurely walk through fields and fells overlooking dales and learn about life as a fell farmer on the commons.

The walk will cover about 2 to 3 miles and you will hear about the Swaledale and Cheviot sheep and Blonde Aquitaine beef cattle that are on the farm. Harry played an active part in setting up the Federation of Cumbria Commons. Common land is the workplace of many hill farmers, tending their livestock through traditional husbandry practrice. Learn about the challenges facing commoners today and how they manage the land to the benefit of us all.

Follow the A683 Sedbergh to Kirkby Stephen road, about 1 mile after passing the Cross Keys pub at Cautley turn right at Rawthey Bridge and right again after a further ¾ mile. Go through a gate signed Uldale House and continue along the track to park at the farm.

Come prepared for any weather, walking boots recommended.

Sorry, no dogs.

Please check on 7th September that the event is going ahead by ringing Penny Ozanne at Friends of the Lake District on 01539 720788 or Harry Hutchinson on 015396nbsp;20635

Location: Uldale House (Grid ref. SD731966), 2:00pm
