John Rice: The Atlantic Arc

A record in words and photographs of a journey to the North Atlantic islands.

Sedbergh poet and storyteller John Rice has long been fascinated by islands; in 1998 he published “The Dream of Night Fishers”, a collection of his poems and photographs of the Hebridean islands. Determined to further explore the wilderness landscapes, the unpredictable weather systems, the expansive Nordic culture and the intriguing family of languages that unites the islands of the far north, he set off in June of this year to backpack around the North Atlantic. Armed with his laptop, camera and drawing materials he set out to record his adventures as he travelled extensively in Shetland, Foula, the Lofoten Islands, Norway’s west and northern coasts, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The result is a fascinating audio/visual presentation that combines a creative travelogue, a selection of poems, a photographic record and humorous stories gathered during his travels. John is currently Scottish Arts Council’s Poet-in-Residence in Glasgow.
